St. Patrick's day is around the corner, and Willow friends will be showing any visiting leprechaun kindness; they have designed a Magnificent House which he would WANT to come and visit. This house includes a two-story bungalow with a nice mailbox for him to receive mail from his family and friends back home. This lucky leprechaun will enjoy his own jeep, airplane, a treehouse with a tire swing, and a waterfall shower out the back. He will have access to a rock wall and...

Starting this weekend, the Young Art 2023: Comfort and Calm exhibition by the San Diego Museum of Art will present thoughtful works of art that use visual storytelling to share students’ experiences with finding, receiving, or offering comfort and calm. Youth artists throughout the San Diego and Tijuana regions were encouraged to express interpretations of the theme, including contrasting ideas of discomfort and discord. Kindergarten through twelfth-grade students responded with works in a wide variety of media depicting people, objects, interiors,...

It was great to see a number of Gillispie parents at this month's Cyber Safety seminar held at the Bishop's School. The presenter shared some concerning issues surrounding the increase in online predators lurking in some of the more popular gaming, social media, and online forums as well as research describing the dangers of social media on children’s well-being. Reaffirming many of our own Gillispie digital citizenship practices, she described a number of ways to keep children...

Learning about sequencing in Kindergarten and early childhood is an important readiness skill that helps young children understand how to recognize patterns and makes their world more understandable and predictable. It is foundational for reading, writing, math, and scientific inquiry. Sequencing is also an important concept for computational thinking. In this unplugged activity, our kindergarten students had fun as they “programmed” each other to go through sequences they created. Taking turns, one child created the program (code)...

It’s time for BOOK MADNESS, Gillispie Library’s annual book tournament! Students vote for their favorite picture books and chapter books in three rounds starting with our “sweet sixteen” titles and narrowing them down until we crown a champion for each division. All of the titles in this year’s epic book battle were published in 2022. They represent a variety of genres (including graphic novel, realistic fiction, humor, and fantasy) and a diverse group of authors, illustrators, and...

Specialty Spotlight: P.E. Students in Early Childhood have been working on large motor movements to music, body control, and throwing and catching. Prekindergarten through Grade 5 students have loved climbing the rock wall the last two weeks. Elementary grades have also been practicing flag football on the field. This week, they learned how to take a hand-off, run through cones, and then evade a defender to score. Grades 3-5 have also been practicing throwing and catching the football. Ed Whelan and...

Recently, the 5th graders found the Library transformed into a Book Cafe! Students browsed titles from several genres: novels in verse, realistic fiction, fantasy, and mystery. For each genre, students chose a book and read a few pages. They then jotted their thoughts on a “menu” provided to them for the "book-tasting" event. This activity exposed students to many new novels recently added to our collection. In addition, several students tried a genre they had never read...
