Each fall in Science-Design class, we focus on community by dedicating the first few weeks of the school year to activities that are made cooperatively, used in groups, and even have metaphorical connections to the concept of togetherness. Our first and second graders are making courses for ping-pong balls. In first grade, we call them Ping-Pong Ball Tracks, and in second grade they’re Ping-Pong Ball Mazes, since dead ends and other complications are introduced. In small groups,...

It may seem like our Grade 6 students are preparing a simple mid-day snack, but they're actually learning an important lesson on bias in code! By examining the different ways that each person interprets the same directions on how to make a P, B & J sandwich, students were able to connect their understanding of subjective and objective opinions with their discussion of the possible implications of code bias in an increasingly automated world. These lessons help students build...

With just days left in the school year, students have been busy with project culminations, presentations, celebrations, and special trips! Last week, we celebrated Crazy Hair and Sock Day on campus, and students, teachers, and staff all got in on the fun. Grade 1 classes had a great time at their Social Studies, Math, and Technology Showcase where they presented their Tynker Jr. coding projects to parents and peers. Our fifth graders climbed aboard the Californian during their visit...

Earlier this year the third graders were treated to a Kamishibai presentation by storyteller Walt Ritter from an organization called Write Out Loud.  Kamishibai is a form of Japanese storytelling that literally translates to "paper theater". The Stories are performed by Kamishibaiya (Kamishibai Narrator) using sets of illustrated boards that are placed in stage-like boxes and narrated as each image is changed. After the presentation, the third graders were inspired to design and build Kamishibai boxes and write and illustrate...

In April, we celebrated International Day on campus and students had a wonderful time learning about and experiencing the customs and cultures of Costa Rica, New Zealand, India, Turkey, Argentina, and Namibia. With passports in hand, they traveled around campus to get a sampling of the sights, sounds, and tastes of these places with performances by cultural dancers, food samples specific to the regions, and hands-on projects and crafts. Thank you to all of our amazing parent volunteers...

The 4th-grade students did an incredible job producing their first News Team using all of the incredible multimedia equipment we were able to acquire as a result of the generous grant from Ellen Browning Scripps Foundation. While the 4th grade has been doing News Team for more than 10 years, the multimedia equipment allowed them to take it to the next level, engaging their creative and critical thinking abilities and making their learning experience truly authentic. To begin...

Prekindergarten students in Juniper Room are working with clay! Last week, they worked on making coil pots and little ceramic bird nests (perfect for the spring season) and incorporating different clay tools and techniques. They are learning about scoring, rolling, pinching, painting with color glaze, and firing their pieces in the kiln (with the teachers' help, of course!) Their pieces are turning out beautifully, and their skills are improving as they practice these fine-motor activities....

Grade 4 students had a special visitor this month in the MPR—Karlene Chavis from CBS8 News Station! Ms. Chavis came to campus to speak to the grade 4 students about what it's like to be a meteorologist. This topic is especially interesting to them, as the Grade 4 students participate in their News Team project, presenting news stories to classmates in the MPR in their mock new station, complete with green screen, cameras, and a teleprompter! They had so many...

As part of their study of light and vision, 3rd graders learned about animation. First, the students were introduced to the idea that a series of images that change very slightly, from one to the next, will give the viewer an illusion of motion if shown at a high enough frame rate. Starting with a student slowly rotating on a turntable as the rest of the class opened and closed their eyes on command, we progressed...

For the past few years, Grade 2 students have been in charge of collecting gently used children’s books for homeless children and families who are supported by St. Vincent de Paul in downtown San Diego. Last year, we collected over 1,000 books for the library in the Family Center at St. Vincent de Paul. For the month of April, there will be red and blue bins around campus where you can drop off the books. Please browse your bookshelves at home for...
