We invite all Grade 2-6 musicians, jugglers, singers, gymnasts, magicians, and more to take the stage for Gillispie's 2nd Annual Talent Show! Auditions for students interested in participating will take place in the MPR on September 12 and 13 after school at 3:30 p.m. Your child only needs to attend one of the two dates. The acts will be seen in the order that they arrive. Students awaiting their turn will gather in the music room. Parents are not...

We had a wonderful time seeing families on campus at the 2023 Spring Arts & Design Showcase on May 26.  We were blown away by the talented musical performances, the beautiful art galleries, and the amazing science and design projects on display. Thank you to everyone who joined us and to our extraordinary specialty teachers Mr. Lewis, Ms. Walters, Mr. Edwards, Mr. Belsha, and Mr. Lawerence for all their hard work producing this event....

Parent volunteers put on a fantastic celebration for Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week! Every day had a clever theme with teachers and staff treated to gourmet coffee from around town served by smiling parent baristas, muffins, bagels, donuts, craft charcuterie, fortune cookies, pies, macarons, and a feast from Phil's BBQ with all the fixings. We want to thank all of the volunteers for their time, bringing in items, baking, writing personal notes to put on the appreciation wall,...

In April, we celebrated International Day on campus and students had a wonderful time learning about and experiencing the customs and cultures of Costa Rica, New Zealand, India, Turkey, Argentina, and Namibia. With passports in hand, they traveled around campus to get a sampling of the sights, sounds, and tastes of these places with performances by cultural dancers, food samples specific to the regions, and hands-on projects and crafts. Thank you to all of our amazing parent volunteers...

Grade 4 students had a special visitor this month in the MPR—Karlene Chavis from CBS8 News Station! Ms. Chavis came to campus to speak to the grade 4 students about what it's like to be a meteorologist. This topic is especially interesting to them, as the Grade 4 students participate in their News Team project, presenting news stories to classmates in the MPR in their mock new station, complete with green screen, cameras, and a teleprompter! They had so many...

We were lucky enough to have a few Early Childhood parents come to campus last month to share more information about Nowruz and Ramadan, both celebrated in March. Norwuz (translated as "New Day" in Farsi) begins on the first day of Spring, marking the Persian New Year, and is celebrated for 13 days. Over 300 million people of diverse faiths and backgrounds celebrate Nowruz worldwide. Ramadan is observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting to commemorate...

To celebrate World Read Aloud Day, two classes had virtual author visits in the Gillspie Library! First, Ms. Leard's and Ms. Young's Kindergarteners met Rebecca Gardyn Levington, author of BRAINSTORM!, a new picture book. Students heard the book read aloud by the author and asked some questions. They wondered how she came up with the idea for the book and how the book was made. The final student comment came from Charlie K., who simply said, “I...

With a generous grant from the Ellen Browning Scripps Foundation, we were able to acquire multimedia equipment that allows our upper elementary students to create, produce, and edit Gillispie activities, programs, and events. Media production is part of our overall media literacy program where we help students develop communication skills as well as learn how to interpret various forms of information, whether conveyed orally, visually, or in writing. Our multimedia literacy program is geared toward upper elementary...

Walt Ritter from Write Out Loud visited the third graders last week to share some stories in the Japanese Kamishibai tradition as a kick-off to their next project in Science & Design class. Kamishibai is a form of Japanese storytelling and literally translates to "paper theater". The Stories are performed by Kamishibaiya (Kamishibai Narrator) using sets of illustrated boards that are placed in stage-like boxes and narrated as each image is changed. The third graders' next design project will involve...
