Last Friday, we held one our of favorite annual end-of-year traditions: the Grade 6 vs Faculty Kickball Game! Grade 6 students took to the field to challenge our faculty and staff players to a lively game while being cheered on by their younger peers. Both teams gave it their all, but in their end the sixth graders won the match 8-7! We were elated to bring back this fun tradition this year, and we will miss this group of amazing students....

The Grade 2 Book Drive results are in, and the event was a HUGE success with a final count of 1,306 books donated to the children of St. Vincent de Paul! Thank you to the Grade 2 students, teachers, and parent volunteers for spearheading this community service initiative, and to all whose donations helped make this possible. Please enjoy this "Thank You" letter we received from St. Vincent de Paul representatives that really speaks to the impact of our collective efforts: Dear...

Dear Parents, Although this year has presented us with many challenges, I think we can all agree that we are very blessed to have this community. In the past, Gillispie has delivered donations to an orphanage in Tijuana that serves children from infancy through 18 years. With Valentine’s Day around the corner, now is the perfect time to restart this tradition of giving to those in need while also involving our kids in the most important value of giving...

Thanks to the nearly 30 parents (and grandparents!) who participated in yesterday's webinar with Professor Seth Lerer. It is not an understatement to say his presentation was riveting, and the ensuing discussion quite lively! A recording of his webinar was sent out for you all to enjoy. Professor Lerer will be joining us for a second session on Dec. 2, at 10 a.m. to share ways that children's literature can serve as a tool for having difficult discussions...

The Grade 3 Blood Drive and Bake sale was a huge success! Overall, we raised $4,092.07 for the San Diego Blood Bank on behalf of Gillispie School and collected 44 pints of blood. That makes 423 pints collected and more than $27,000 raised since 2010! We'd like to thank everyone who donated blood and baked goods and bought items from the bake sale. We'd also like to thank the following bakeries for donating treats for the event: Brick & Bell...

What is the best way to organize our classroom library? How might we reduce food waste at our school? How can we combat pollution on the La Jolla coastline? In what ways could we address the homelessness issue in San Diego? Questions like these, whether small or big, drive the work of students in classrooms that take a project-based approach to learning. They also look a lot like the types of questions adult professionals face daily...
