This morning at the Greeting Meeting, Grade 2 presented their new recycling program! The students explained that flexible snack pouches cannot be recycled. Elementary students collected the pouches from our EC students for a week and calculated that Gillispie students throw 6,000 of these pouches in the landfill every year! But don’t worry, our Grade 2 students have a solution!  Through an organization called TerraCycle, the students will collect and recycle these pouches and, for every 10 pounds...

In the first Sun article generated by students, two of our Grade 6 student leaders, Joie and Ian, share insights on the importance of following the Gillispie Digital ICARE Values. Joie begins by walking us through a couple of examples of how we can apply the values of Integrity and Compassion when using technology:  The first two ICARE values are Integrity and Compassion. They aren’t just important in and out of school, but in technology, too. When you...

Grade 5 students participated in a simulated workday experience at the McGrath Family Junior Achievement’s BizTown! Students are able to help run various businesses for the day, earn paychecks, open bank accounts, pay taxes, vote, and are challenged to earn a profit in their endeavors. Our fifth graders were encouraged to use critical thinking skills to...

Parent volunteers put on a fantastic celebration for Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week! Every day had a clever theme with teachers and staff treated to gourmet coffee from around town served by smiling parent baristas, muffins, bagels, donuts, craft charcuterie, fortune cookies, pies, macarons, and a feast from Phil's BBQ with all the fixings. We want to thank all of the volunteers for their time, bringing in items, baking, writing personal notes to put on the appreciation wall,...

Over 70 Gillispie students had a great time participating in the La Jolla Kiwanis Club's Junior Olympics in April. Out of 800 total students from nine schools, Gillispie athletes won gold, silver, and bronze medals in individual events; a bronze medal in girls' 100 meters, and fastest girl in La Jolla in the 400-meter race. Thanks to all the students for showing great sportsmanship and teamwork!...

In April, we celebrated International Day on campus and students had a wonderful time learning about and experiencing the customs and cultures of Costa Rica, New Zealand, India, Turkey, Argentina, and Namibia. With passports in hand, they traveled around campus to get a sampling of the sights, sounds, and tastes of these places with performances by cultural dancers, food samples specific to the regions, and hands-on projects and crafts. Thank you to all of our amazing parent volunteers...

For the past few years, Grade 2 students have been in charge of collecting gently used children’s books for homeless children and families who are supported by St. Vincent de Paul in downtown San Diego. Last year, we collected over 1,000 books for the library in the Family Center at St. Vincent de Paul. For the month of April, there will be red and blue bins around campus where you can drop off the books. Please browse your bookshelves at home for...

We were lucky enough to have a few Early Childhood parents come to campus last month to share more information about Nowruz and Ramadan, both celebrated in March. Norwuz (translated as "New Day" in Farsi) begins on the first day of Spring, marking the Persian New Year, and is celebrated for 13 days. Over 300 million people of diverse faiths and backgrounds celebrate Nowruz worldwide. Ramadan is observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting to commemorate...
