The Grade 2 Book Drive is on Now!

For the past few years, Grade 2 students have been in charge of collecting gently used children’s books for homeless children and families who are supported by St. Vincent de Paul in downtown San Diego.

Last year, we collected over 1,000 books for the library in the Family Center at St. Vincent de Paul.

For the month of April, there will be red and blue bins around campus where you can drop off the books. Please browse your bookshelves at home for items that your family would like to donate. We are collecting gently used children’s books (toddler through teens) in Spanish and English!

Thank you for supporting this important cause!

A message from St. Vincent De Paul:

“We always have approximately 150 children who reside here with their parents.  Families live here for a year. During that time the program provides mentoring and tutoring support to our children. We also offer the families a Parent and Children Together Time class to introduce them to the pleasures of reading together.

We have shared with the students that their donation means a lot to a homeless child.  Without books, our children don’t learn to read. They suffer the consequences of low vocabulary development by performing poorly in school.  The donation of books save a lot of children from becoming poor readers. Often, once they fall behind, they never catch up. Poor readers often drop out of high school. Their donation is helping to break the cycle of illiteracy.”
