The Grade 2 Book Drive results are in, and the event was a HUGE success with a final count of 1,306 books donated to the children of St. Vincent de Paul! Thank you to the Grade 2 students, teachers, and parent volunteers for spearheading this community service initiative, and to all whose donations helped make this possible. Please enjoy this "Thank You" letter we received from St. Vincent de Paul representatives that really speaks to the impact of our collective efforts: Dear...

Sometimes, the best, deepest, longest-lasting learning comes from doing (as opposed to, say, hearing about) something. In Science, students very often manipulate materials to create physical expressions of the concepts being addressed in class-- “making,” for short. There is a well-defined thought process called Design Thinking that guides us through our maker projects--it’s a topic that merits its own discussion. Every maker project takes time, which results in a meaningful relationship to the underlying concepts, and...

For your convenience, the presentation is a video that...

We had so much fun this past Monday gathering for an alumni reunion of former Gillispie students graduating from high school this year. After what has truly been a remarkable senior year, these resilient students are preparing for the next step in their educational journey, with many leaving San Diego for college in the fall! It was lovely and nostalgic to have these bright young adults back on campus for a visit, and we are so proud of their accomplishments!...

In music this year students have had the opportunity to share their work, compositions, and even solos with the class. In these experiences, our students develop confidence, empathy, and presentation skills. Many students have requested to perform with instruments that they are learning outside of school. A few weeks ago, one student asked if she could play her violin with her Kindergarten class. For many of our students, this was the first time they had seen or heard a...

Gillispie is proud to partner with the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego and North County Food Banks to sponsor a Food Drive this April 21-23. Before COVID-19, the San Diego Food Bank provided food assistance to 350,000 per month or about 11% of the county’s population. Since COVID-19, the Food Bank has been feeding 600,000 people per month, or closer to 20% of the population. From mid-March 2020 through October 2021, the Food Bank distributed more than 37...

You may have seen that the State updated travel guidance on April 2 as it pertains to COVID-19 and quarantining after travel. While they continue to urge anyone not vaccinated to refrain from any unnecessary/recreational travel, they have removed the 120-mile distance as a threshold for the need to quarantine. Gillispie will continue to follow State guidance and will therefore require a 7-day quarantine for those not fully vaccinated if they are returning to San Diego...

Sometimes, in the course of teaching my different subjects to different grade levels, I’ll suddenly realize that two totally different areas of study are simultaneously touching upon the same underlying science concept. I guess it’s possible that I’m unconsciously guiding these convergences, but I nevertheless marvel a little bit at the crossing of content strands. Currently, not two, but three such strands are crossing, as 2nd, 5th, and 6th graders all arrive at the idea of...
