Prekindergarten students in Juniper Room are working with clay! Last week, they worked on making coil pots and little ceramic bird nests (perfect for the spring season) and incorporating different clay tools and techniques. They are learning about scoring, rolling, pinching, painting with color glaze, and firing their pieces in the kiln (with the teachers' help, of course!) Their pieces are turning out beautifully, and their skills are improving as they practice these fine-motor activities....

Meals on Wheels delivers special Happy Birthday gift bags to older adults receiving their services. It is a lovely way to show them love on their birthdays! The Community Relations Committee helped Gillispie students make handcrafted cards and artwork that Meals on Wheels will deliver with the birthday packages to older adults. It will surely brighten their day! The students were enthusiastic and the artwork was heartwarming! Thanks to the parents who volunteered to help. The Community Relations Committee...

Grade 4 students had a special visitor this month in the MPR—Karlene Chavis from CBS8 News Station! Ms. Chavis came to campus to speak to the grade 4 students about what it's like to be a meteorologist. This topic is especially interesting to them, as the Grade 4 students participate in their News Team project, presenting news stories to classmates in the MPR in their mock new station, complete with green screen, cameras, and a teleprompter! They had so many...

As part of their study of light and vision, 3rd graders learned about animation. First, the students were introduced to the idea that a series of images that change very slightly, from one to the next, will give the viewer an illusion of motion if shown at a high enough frame rate. Starting with a student slowly rotating on a turntable as the rest of the class opened and closed their eyes on command, we progressed...

On display in the lobby is the first-grade interdisciplinary Community Project! This beautiful piece of work was a collaborative effort between the homeroom teachers, Science & Design, Spanish, Music, and Art classes exploring the concept of "community" from each vantage point. In Music, they discussed and learned about various music venues within the San Diego community. In homeroom social studies, they learned about communities past and present, and at one point zoomed in on their local neighborhood of La...

For the past few years, Grade 2 students have been in charge of collecting gently used children’s books for homeless children and families who are supported by St. Vincent de Paul in downtown San Diego. Last year, we collected over 1,000 books for the library in the Family Center at St. Vincent de Paul. For the month of April, there will be red and blue bins around campus where you can drop off the books. Please browse your bookshelves at home for...

We were lucky enough to have a few Early Childhood parents come to campus last month to share more information about Nowruz and Ramadan, both celebrated in March. Norwuz (translated as "New Day" in Farsi) begins on the first day of Spring, marking the Persian New Year, and is celebrated for 13 days. Over 300 million people of diverse faiths and backgrounds celebrate Nowruz worldwide. Ramadan is observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting to commemorate...

Thanks to our amazing Gillispie families and community partners, this year's “party with a purpose” was a terrific success. For those of you who could not attend, please enjoy the videos we sent! While we dined on delicious food and cut a rug on the dance floor, the centerpiece of the evening was our students and our teachers, who were highlighted multiple times throughout the night. And because of your generosity, we raised more than $473,000,...

It's tulip time in the art garden! The tulip bulbs the Kindergarteners planted in January are now in full bloom in the art garden classroom. They loved the rain and cooler temperatures. We have all enjoyed the experience of watching them grow over the past two months. These tulips have been the source of our artistic inspiration throughout all grade levels recently. - Kindergarten: clay slab tulip gardens - 1st grade: Eric Carle painted paper collages - 2nd grade: oil pastel...

St. Patrick's day is around the corner, and Willow friends will be showing any visiting leprechaun kindness; they have designed a Magnificent House which he would WANT to come and visit. This house includes a two-story bungalow with a nice mailbox for him to receive mail from his family and friends back home. This lucky leprechaun will enjoy his own jeep, airplane, a treehouse with a tire swing, and a waterfall shower out the back. He will have access to a rock wall and...
