In a recent Real Simple article, “How to Raise a Problem-Solver," writer Joanne Nesbit quotes a CEO of a cloud-based, reference-checking firm: “Young people’s ability to get things done on their own and take initiative is one of the biggest employer concerns.” Ms. Nesbit went on to advise how we can help children build these critical skills. Her ideas included allowing for open-ended, loosely-supervised play; providing opportunities for children to complete real-life tasks; asking our young ones...

When the discussion of names came up in Rosewood room, teachers saw an opportunity to inspire students to reflect on what their names mean. They soon noticed that the children were getting confused with such a literal question, so they took a new approach to the discussion. Instead of asking, "What does your name mean?" they asked, "What does it mean to be you?" Student responses included: "Being Dagny means like fun!" - Dagny "Uhmm, hero, and super lion, and a super speedy...

Grade 3 students have been enjoying time spent with their Kindergarten Book Buddies! Our Book Buddies program pairs upper elementary students with their younger cohorts for weekly meeting spent reading or playing together around campus. Kindergarten students are working on their reading and writing skills, while Grade 3 students are working on their while confidence reading aloud. Both classes enjoy the camaraderie and mentorship that the program provides!   About Gillispie School: Gillispie is an independent toddler through Grade 6 school...

Our students are tumbling, kicking, spiking, and throwing with FULL FORCE thanks to an incredibly generous gift from the Ellen Browning Scripps Foundation! A long-time supporter of Gillispie, the Ellen Browning Scripps Foundation was founded by its namesake, an American journalist and philanthropist. In her lifetime, Ellen Browning Scripps gave most of her vast fortune away, and through her foundation, her legacy is felt to this day. “The most important and beautiful gift one human being can give...

Over the past two years, the Student Learning Center (formerly the Reading Room) at Gillispie has worked closely with classroom teachers to strengthen the use of differentiated instruction in each classroom. Differentiation allows for each student’s unique learning styles to be addressed through a variety of instructional techniques, flexible small group instruction, and multiple learning modalities. Across the primary grades, reading, spelling patterns, and writing instruction are being delivered through whole group instruction as well as through...

At last week’s assembly, representatives from Friends and Families Community Connection educated the elementary students about the organization and what to expect at the upcoming Fight for Hunger event. The goal? If successful, 50,000 meals would materialize. How? Bags would be filled to contain 6 meals each, and with 36 bags placed in each box, volunteers would need to pack 232 boxes. “Whoa!” noted the students.“That’s a lot of math.” And in just over two hours, 51,840 meals were...

Meet Sarah Swasey, our new Advancement Associate, in our latest community blog post!   What was it about Gillispie that made you want to work here? The upbeat campus environment was a huge draw for me! Coming from the sometimes-lackluster government contracting world, I was excited to work in a creative and inspiring setting on a cause as important as childhood education. Gillispie's staff and students are just what I needed to brighten my days!   What is your favorite thing/hobby...

¡Hola familias!  ¿Cómo se llama? Here's a quick Spanish highlight: Students in Grade 5 participated in the Llama Contest by decorating a picture of a llama and answering 5 questions about themselves: comida favorita (favorite food), vacación favorita (favorite vacation), cumpleaños favorito (favorite birthday), and cosas favoritas (favorite things to do). After the llamas were done, students swapped their answers and decorated drawings and had to guess who they belonged to. They then voted anonymously for the best llama and the two winners...

Meet Taylor Brady, Gillispie's new Preschool Co-Teacher in Rosewood Room! What inspired you to work with kids? I started babysitting when I was 12, and ever since that first job, I knew that I wanted to work with children in some capacity. But it wasn’t until an internship I had in college, working for an early childhood daycare center that was also Reggio inspired, that I realized I wanted to pursue teaching. What is your favorite thing/hobby to do...

In Science, Grade 1 students are learning about mimicry: how animals can resemble another poisonous animal (i.e. with colors and patterns) to scare their predators away. In an experiment, students had the opportunity to become the predator and make a choice based on what a drink looked like. The students tried two different liquids that looked exactly the same (clear and bubbly). One tasted good (sweet) and the other one tasted bad (sour). They were then provided two more...
