Gillispie Food Drive April 21-23

Gillispie is proud to partner with the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego and North County Food Banks to sponsor a Food Drive this April 21-23.

Before COVID-19, the San Diego Food Bank provided food assistance to 350,000 per month or about 11% of the county’s population. Since COVID-19, the Food Bank has been feeding 600,000 people per month, or closer to 20% of the population. From mid-March 2020 through October 2021, the Food Bank distributed more than 37 million pounds of food to individuals, families, and older adults impacted by the pandemic. BEFORE the pandemic, one in five children in San Diego county faced food insecurity. This number has since skyrocketed.

Gillispie will have containers at drop-off and pick up on Wednesday, April 21, Thursday, April 22, and at Friday morning drop-off on April 23 on both Girard and Fay. We are collecting non-perishable food items only, and nothing can be homemade or in glass jars/containers.

The Food Bank is trying to balance the need for food with the need to prioritize health. For that reason, the most requested food items are:

·       Low/no sodium canned meats/tuna

·       No sugar-added peanut butter

·       Low/no sodium canned soups

·       Low sugar/sodium canned fruits, vegetables, and beans

·       Pasta, rice, mac & cheese

·       Low-sugar cereal

·       Unsalted nuts

·       Low/non-fat powered milk

·       While not a food, diapers are a highly desirable item.

We appreciate your participation in this drive and hope you will get the whole family involved in selecting foods to contribute and by discussing the reality of hunger in our communities.

Thank you, from the Community Relations Committee:

Casey Armstrong, Jennifer Carter, Jenny Garza, Jessica Goff, Zoe Kleinbub, Debbie Rodriguez, Susan Yang (Chair)
