This week, third-grade students learned to cook buñuelos with Chef Marcella! She explained the difference between buñuelos and churros and asked the students to identify the Spanish words for ingredients like sugar and cinnamon. This activity marks the culmination of the third-grade curriculum, where students explore the 21 Spanish-speaking countries worldwide. Parents are invited to teach students how to prepare traditional dishes, fostering interactive experiences that deepen students' appreciation of the cultural aspects embedded within the Spanish language....

Juniper hosted grandparents and special guests, lovingly nicknamed "Hey-Hey" and "Dude”! This Juniper grandfather grew up in New York City, "home of the world's best pizza", and his mission was to teach the class how to make a great slice! The grandparents came prepared with a pizza pan per child, homemade dough, and individually portioned cheese and sauce for the children. Each child created a personal pizza pie! They rolled their dough, spread the sauce, and sprinkled the...

This week, our Grade 5 science and design students collaborated with students from Kindergarten to Grade 6 to identify areas for improvement in their classrooms. When interviewing the Grade 2 students, the organization of books, balls, and headphones was a concern. They also wanted their iPad recharging stations to be more accessible. One second grader felt they needed better access to the shelves housing their backpacks—the space between the tables and the shelves was too narrow. Another...

Juniper explored cyanotype printing to create "Floral Echos" for the Boots & Bling Silent Auction. Cyanotype is an antique photographic process where light-sensitive fabric captures anything that casts a shadow, producing blue monochromatic prints. Working together, the children collected flowers from the gardens around the school and arranged them on the cyanotype fabric. Excitement filled the air as the fabric transformed under the sun's rays. But the real magic happened when the children rinsed the fabric in...

This past week, Grade 5 students participated in Junior Achievement BizTown. This program combines in-class learning with a day-long visit to a simulated town. Our students had the opportunity to operate banks, manage restaurants, write checks, and vote for mayor. Students connect the dots between what they learn in school and the real world. Prior to attending BizTown, Grade 5 students learned how an economy works, how to apply and interview for a job, operate a successful...

In Round 1, 144 students voted. They narrowed the field from the "Sweet 16" titles to the "Elite 8". Students chose a nonfiction picture book about jumping spiders over the 2024 Caldecott medalist! In Round 2, 155 students voted. We narrowed the field from the "Elite 8" to the "Final 4", and the 2024 Newbery medalist was knocked out of the competition! We are now in Round 3, our final round. The final four books are The Skull...

At the end of Winter Enrichment, students performed in "Barbie for Kids", completed Ninja Camp, experienced all things Water World, and so much more! These were just a few of the 23 enrichment classes led by our talented Gillispie School faculty and outside instructors. Spring Enrichment has started and just a few spaces remain!...

Weekly, Willow friends enjoy reading books with their Book Buddies from Ms. Haas's Grade 4 class. On E days, we meet either upstairs or downstairs in our classroom and enjoy reading, playing games, and learning about each other. Throughout the year, the children will be paired up with different fourth graders, providing opportunities to get to know many of them. What we love most about Book Buddies are the lasting friendships and memories the children will...
