Grade 5 Goes to Biz Town

Gillispie School Upper Elementary Program

Last week, our fifth-grade students stepped beyond the classroom and into the real world during their visit to JA BizTown, an immersive program by Junior Achievement of San Diego County.

Led by a Grade 5 teacher, this annual experience culminates in a four-hour simulation inside a mini-city in Mission Valley, where students join peers from other schools to bring economics and entrepreneurship to life.

BizTown is connected to the classroom curriculum. In the months leading up to the trip, students explored financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and career readiness through hands-on learning. Prior to the BizTown visit, mock interviews with parent volunteers also gave students the chance to practice professionalism and communication skills.

At BizTown, and in partnership with Encinitas Country Day School, students took on roles as business owners, employees, and consumers. They managed storefronts, handled finances, and worked together to keep their businesses running smoothly. They calculated operating costs, completed loan applications, and created advertisements, gaining a clear understanding of how businesses operate.

Throughout the experience, students demonstrated teamwork, adaptability, and strong communication skills. They asked thoughtful questions, supported one another, and showed impressive leadership and maturity.
