Recently, Grade 3 became the center of an exciting journey that captured the attention of our students. Thanks to one of our Grade 3 grandparents, students were able to observe the life cycle of Monarch butterflies up close.
The class was provided with five Monarch caterpillars, fresh milkweed, and a special butterfly habitat. The habitat was placed outside the Grade 3 classroom, where students in Grades 3–6 gathered each day to observe the caterpillars’ progress.
There was a flutter of excitement in the hallway as students watched the tiny caterpillars grow bigger each day. Equipped with magnifying glasses, students examined the caterpillars through the netting and witnessed each stage of transformation — from caterpillars to chrysalises and eventually to beautiful Monarch butterflies.
Grade 3 student Ben S. explained that his grandparents have been doing this since he was in EC, and that it is very special for him and his family.
This learning experience extended beyond science observations. During this time, the grandparents also shared their knowledge with the students by reading about Monarch butterflies together. Inspired by what they learned, students incorporated their discoveries into a recent writing project, connecting their own growth and experiences with the transformations these amazing creatures undergo.
The experience concluded with a butterfly release. It was a memorable moment that brought joy, wonder, and a deeper connection to nature for our students.
We are incredibly grateful to the grandparents who made this experience possible in Grade 3, as well as in EC and Grade 1. Their kindness and enthusiasm touched our entire school community.
