Kindergarten students recently created coastal-inspired art by gluing seashells onto canvas. As they explored patterns, symmetry, and design to create unique pieces, the learning naturally expanded.
Students counted every shell they used, with some pieces including well over 200 seashells, turning their designs into a meaningful math experience. Counting objects they had chosen and arranged themselves made the process feel purposeful and engaging rather than abstract.
The project also included a writing component, as students described what inspired their designs. Even simple sentences encouraged reflection, vocabulary development, and early written expression, reinforcing that art can tell a story.
Beyond art, math, and literacy, this open-ended experience supported confidence and independence. With no single “right” outcome, students were free to take risks, make choices, and feel proud of their work.
We love seeing learning come to life in our classrooms through creativity, exploration, and meaningful connections across subjects.
We invite you to stop by the Kindergarten Cottage during the Arts & Design Showcase on Friday, May 15, to see these beautiful and thoughtful creations in person!
