How Pre-K Painted A Sunset Together

Gillispie School Pre-K Program

This year’s Spring Arts & Design Showcase had an incredible array of beautiful and unique art on display. One of the featured pieces in the Art Atelier was Sunset, a collaborative artwork created by Pre-K students. While the final piece captured the beauty of a glowing sunset, the most meaningful part of the project was not the finished canvas, but the creative journey that led to it.

The project began simply: children were presented with a blank white canvas and leftover acrylic paints from throughout the year. There was no plan, no instructions, and no expected outcome. Starting with darker colors and gradually moving toward lighter shades, children independently chose one color at a time and were free to contribute however they wished. Participation was completely voluntary, allowing each child to engage naturally and authentically in the process.

A few days into the project, one child observed, “It looks like a sunset,” and from that moment, the group began to see the evolving artwork through a new lens. Reference photos of sunsets were introduced, not as examples to copy, but as conversation starters about beauty in nature, changing colors in the sky, family beach memories, and the importance of noticing the world around us.

Rooted in the philosophy of process art, the experience emphasized exploration, experimentation, and self-expression over a predetermined product. Rather than following step-by-step directions, children were encouraged to make choices, take creative risks, and respond to the materials in their own ways. The result was a piece that was unique and deeply connected to the children who created it together. Sunset reminds us that creativity flourishes when children are given the freedom, time, and trust to explore. This summer, try leaving out a blank canvas and leftover paints for your children and watch what it becomes!
