In Gillispie’s outdoor garden, something special has been taking shape. Our preschool students have been hard at work on a collaborative project—a beautiful tree chandelier inspired by a unique branch Mrs. A discovered on a walk. What began as a simple found object has blossomed into a meaningful exploration of creativity, science, and connection to nature.
This project weaves together art and engineering in an age-appropriate and engaging way. As students design and build their chandelier, they are introduced to the basics of a pulley system, discovering how this simple machine can help us lift and display their tree chandelier. At the same time, they are transforming natural and repurposed materials into something visually striking, reinforcing the value of resourcefulness and sustainability.
Beyond the finished piece, the process itself has been rich with developmental benefits. As children carefully thread beads and arrange their designs, they strengthen fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and bilateral integration. The repetitive, focused nature of beading also offers a calming, meditative experience—helping students settle into a “flow state” where concentration and creativity flourish.
Because the branch is one-of-a-kind and every bead has been thoughtfully placed by the children, the final chandelier is entirely their own. It stands not only as a work of art, but as a reflection of collaboration, patience, and imagination—rooted in nature and brought to life by our students’ hands.
