Gillispie preschoolers recently embarked on an exciting rocket ship adventure, sparked by Earth Day discussions and the wonder of seeing Earth from Artemis. The children were especially amazed to learn that Artemis landed in the Pacific Ocean just off our coast. Inspired, they quickly began imagining, designing, and creating their own space journeys.
With the guidance of Mr. B., a design and science teacher, young learners took the lead in bringing their rocket ship to life. Together, they explored ideas, made plans, and built their design step by step. Mr. B.’s collaboration made the experience both meaningful and inspiring—a true example of curiosity and hands-on learning in action.
Once their design was complete, the children visited the design center to see their ideas take shape. Sitting at the big tables like our older students filled them with pride and excitement. They watched in awe as a laser cutter precisely shaped the rocket’s fins and as 3D printers created its top. Experiencing these tools up close made the process unforgettable.
Back in the classroom, the children painted their rockets, telling their teachers that they couldn’t wait to bring their rocket ships home so they could play with them!
This project is a beautiful reminder that even at 3 and 4 years old, children can achieve incredible things when we let them "play" to their interest.
