Seeds of Learning: First Graders Lead the Way

Gillispie School First Graders Lead the Way

Our Grade 1 students joined the Pre-Kindergarten morning meeting to share their knowledge about the life cycle of a seed and the parts of a plant.

The first graders introduced the concept, and the Pre-K students then split into small groups to explore the lesson with their older peers.

The first graders guided the Pre-K students through the posters and charts they had created, showing the different parts of plants—roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits, and seeds—along with the conditions plants need to grow. They explained how plants need sunshine, water, and soil to thrive.

The Pre-K students responded with interest, eager to learn from the first graders. The older students also brought books about plants and the journey from seed to sprout.

Later, the first graders returned to help their Pre-K friends plant vegetables and herbs in the outdoor garden bed. Working together, they planted seeds, watered them, and supported each other in the activity.

This collaboration provided a meaningful learning experience and encouraged curiosity about the natural world. The Pre-K students gained knowledge from their older peers, who served as role models in teamwork, learning, sharing, and appreciation of the natural world.
