This month, our fifth and sixth graders went on an interdisciplinary adventure that brought together Spanish and P.E., culminating in a soccer tournament en español!
In Spanish, students used Book Creator to research a Spanish-speaking country of their choice. From learning about traditional foods and colorful folk dances to discovering influential Hispanic leaders who helped shape the U.S., students deepened their cultural understanding through creativity and inquiry.
Meanwhile, in P.E., students brought those lessons to the field with a spirited soccer tournament! Representing Spain, Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, and Costa Rica, students practiced essential soccer skills, sportsmanship, and teamwork. Using what they learned in Spanish, they designed national flags, created lively chants en español, and communicated using Spanish vocabulary throughout the tournament. Even the referee, a Gillispie alumnus, made the calls in Spanish.
Congratulations to Team Argentina, this year's winners of the Spanish/P.E. soccer tournament!
When we connect subjects through reading, writing, art, movement, and collaboration, learning becomes meaningful and fun!
