This week, our preschoolers' dramatic play area took an exciting new direction! After a wonderful run with their campsite theme, the children were invited to help decide what should come next. During Morning Meeting, one idea kept soaring above the rest: an airline and airport. With Spring Break just around the corner and travel plans on the horizon for several families, it felt like the perfect time to bring this idea to life.
Together, they transformed the space under the loft into “Juniper Airlines.” The children worked collaboratively to design the layout, arranging four chairs to represent passenger seating and the cockpit. They helped create a control center at the front and imagined what it would feel like to fly through the clouds. Their thoughtful suggestions brought incredible detail to the space, including seat belts, seat-back compartments, overhead reading lights, and even a microphone for in-flight announcements.
To enhance the experience, they incorporated real-world elements like a laptop, keyboard, and steering wheel. A special addition was a conveyor belt created by former Gillispie students, which the children eagerly repurposed for luggage at both security and baggage claim—adding an extra layer of authenticity to their play.
Once “Juniper Airlines” officially opened, the children jumped right into their roles. They took turns as pilots, passengers, flight attendants, and air traffic controllers, demonstrating impressive creativity and collaboration. It has been a joy to observe how they draw from their own travel experiences, weaving them into imaginative and meaningful storylines.
Juniper Airlines has truly taken imagination to new heights, and we can’t wait to see where our young travelers will fly next!
