How a Spider Sparked a Web of Learning

How a Spider Sparked a Web of Learning at Gillispie

Our littlest learners in Maple were mesmerized when they discovered a big garden spider in our outdoor classroom. Their excitement was contagious; they couldn’t wait to share their discovery with teachers and friends. This encounter led to spider-themed fun and many hands-on activities!

The children sorted colorful spider figures by color, size, and type, strengthening their observation, matching, and early math skills. They also made their own spider webs using their fingers, an activity that was both fun and sensory-rich, while helping to develop fine motor coordination and pre-writing abilities.

Another favorite was making spider prints with play-dough. This activity encouraged imagination, strengthened hand muscles, and allowed the children to explore patterns and textures.

Thanks to our outdoor garden and this beautiful spider, our Maple kids built confidence and curiosity.
