Fourth Graders Make a Difference at Feeding San Diego!

Gillispie School Fourth Graders Make a Difference at Feeding San Diego!

Fourth graders recently stepped beyond the classroom walls and into an important community action during a field trip to Feeding San Diego. This local nonprofit is dedicated to fighting food insecurity and ensuring that everyone—regardless of circumstance—has access to nutritious meals. A cornerstone of its mission is food rescue: recovering fresh, edible food that would otherwise go to waste and redirecting it to families in need.

During their 90-minute volunteer shift, students rolled up their sleeves and got to work. Together, they sorted, inspected, and bagged an impressive 3,600 pounds of cucumbers that might otherwise have ended up in a landfill. Instead, this fresh produce will be delivered to local schools, community centers, and churches—ultimately reaching 1,800 families across the community.

This experience offered more than just hands-on service. Students gained a deeper understanding of food insecurity and the environmental impact of food waste. Working side by side also strengthened their teamwork and communication skills as they collaborated toward a shared goal.

Perhaps most powerful was the sense that their efforts mattered. Students spoke of the impact this volunteer action had on them and were impressed by the amount of food they were able to recover.

Service-learning opportunities like this help students recognize the importance of accountability and compassion, showing them that even at a young age, they have the ability to make a meaningful difference in the world around them.
