First graders completed an exciting project that combined writing, teamwork, and media production! The project began with an introduction to explanatory writing, where students learned to use transition words, craft topic and concluding sentences, and write clear, step-by-step directions.

Students worked in teams to co-author instructional booklets. This phase required collaboration, communication, and a lot of compromise! Once their booklets were complete, each team transformed their work into a script for a “How-To” video and decided who would do what.

With scripts in hand, the students took their project to the next level by filming on location in the Sandbox Kitchen and even using green screen technology! Guided by Ms. Waters, they learned how to present confidently on camera and bring their writing to life.

The final videos showed the students’ creativity, teamwork, and growing confidence as writers and presenters. This project is a wonderful example of how interdisciplinary learning fosters not only academic skills, but also collaboration and self-expression.
