“Around the World” in Our Classrooms

Gillispie School Around the World

The world is coming to our students’ classrooms at Gillispie! Families are sharing their favorite traditions with their children’s classes, creating meaningful, hands-on learning experiences.

Last week, Kindergarten students in Ms. Collins and Mrs. Winkie’s class learned about the tradition of challah bread. After hearing its story and significance, they had the chance to shape and decorate their own challah, making this a thoughtful, creative, and tasty experience!

Grade 3 students in Ms. Hurley’s class were introduced to Russian hamburgers. They explored the history behind this favorite dish and, of course, were invited to try it! Each student received a copy of the recipe so families can make it at home.

Grade 5 students in Mrs. Chaney’s class took part in making homemade raspberry/cranberry jam, a cherished family recipe passed down from a student’s grandmother that their family makes every year. Students not only learned about this family tradition but also about the process of making jam. Each student went home with a small jar to share with their family!

“Around the World” opens our classrooms to family stories and cultural traditions, creating a welcoming space where students learn from one another, celebrate their uniqueness, and build lasting connections. Together, we are building community.
