This month, our pre-school students began their self-portrait journey for the year! Self-portraits are a meaningful way for children to reflect on themselves while noticing the unique features that make them special. For this first project, each child received a mirror, white paper, and a black marker, along with the simple prompt: “Look in the mirror and draw what you see.”

Some children jumped right in with confidence, while others took a little encouragement before beginning. As they worked, wonderful conversations unfolded about shapes, sizes, and facial features. Their words revealed both curiosity and humor: “I have teeth. I’m happy!”, “My face is like a round ball to kick,” and “It’s so beautiful.” From rainbow hair to curly hair, extra lips to missing belly buttons, their personalities and perspectives came shining through.

This first step sets the stage for a year of growth, reflection, and creativity. We look forward to watching how their self-portraits evolve each month, as their artwork—and self-awareness—continues to blossom.
