Watching children of different ages learn and grow together is one of our favorite things at Gillispie. Recently, Grade 1 students shared their knowledge of the plant life cycle with their preschool buddies, then helped them plant vegetables and herbs. The first sprouts are already beginning to emerge!
The learning began during Morning Meeting, where first graders introduced the journey from seed to plant. In small groups, they guided their younger buddies through posters and charts they had created, identifying roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits, and seeds. Books about plants helped them explore what seeds need to grow. They loved being the teachers!
Later, the buddies took their teaching and learning outdoors. Together, they planted seeds and watered the garden bed, putting their knowledge into practice.
These shared experiences are important for both age groups. For first graders, teaching offers a chance to organize their thinking, explain ideas clearly, and practice patience. For preschoolers, learning alongside an older buddy makes space for questions, exploration, and connection. Each child has something to contribute, and the bonds formed through our buddy program last throughout their years at Gillispie.
As the season unfolds, the garden will give the buddies more to notice and wonder about together.
