Firefighters Visit Gillispie

Local Firefighters Visit Gillispie School

Our students had the exciting opportunity to meet some local heroes! Grade 1 welcomed the crew and their fire engine from Fire Station 13 in La Jolla. Students got a firsthand look at the equipment and tools firefighters use every day. They were thrilled to see the fire engine up close, explore the hoses, and learn about the firefighters’ gear.

Meanwhile, Grade 3 had a special visit from local firefighter, Captain Patrick Spears. This was his second year visiting Grade 3, and the students loved hearing his stories about life at the fire station, asking him questions, and learning fire safety tips. They were eager to learn about the daily responsibilities of firefighters and the skills it takes to keep our community safe.

At one point, Captain Spears explained that his suit and gear are very heavy, adding an extra 75 pounds, making it challenging to carry through a burning building. That’s why teamwork and training to build stamina are so important.

These visits are not only fun experiences for our students, but they also help them connect with real-life heroes in their community. Meeting firefighters teaches children about the vital role of emergency services and fosters respect for the people who dedicate their lives to keeping us safe.

Getting to know our local heroes can inspire students to think about ways they can help others. It’s an important experience that combines learning, safety, and community.
