Hands in Clay, Minds at Play

Gillispie School Pre-K Students

The Sequoia Room has been buzzing with creativity since the children began experimenting with clay. With blocks of clay, rollers for stretching, wooden cutters, and a little water to support their work, the children eagerly set off on their journey of discovery. Some enjoyed exploring the textures, while others used their imagination to shape both real and make-believe creations.

Cookie cutters were added to inspire further exploration. The children quickly began using these new tools to expand their ideas and try out new designs.

Within a few days, their imaginations truly came to life. One student began creating flowers, using a hammer holder to press patterns into the petals. Another first sculpted a foot, which then transformed into a beautiful sunflower. These moments highlighted how the children’s projects evolve as they experimented and built confidence with the material.

Working with clay is more than just fun—it helps children grow in many ways. Manipulating clay strengthens both fine and gross motor skills, which are essential for hand control and coordination. The texture of the clay also stimulates the senses, enhancing sensory awareness. As children shape, roll, and mold, they engage their creativity, practice problem-solving, and express their unique ideas.

Clay exploration will continue in the coming weeks with an open-ended creative project. We can’t wait to see the amazing creations that emerge as the children keep experimenting and imagining with this versatile medium!
