This Year’s Big Project Brings It Back Home

The Gillispie School Big Project last year reached for the stars, asking students to imagine settling a new planet. The three-day multi-discipline experience allowed children to think collaboratively about what goes into developing a new society and required them to use skills and content knowledge to plan for the roads, buildings, vehicles, laws, and jobs we would need in our new other-worldly community.

This year, and for the foreseeable future, we will be turning our focus to the community in which we actually live. Working on the theme that positive change in the world starts at home, Gillispie elementary students will be exploring real issues that face our community. Each grade level will tackle its own issue and engage in a deep dive into defining the issue, examining who the issue impacts, and how the issue impacts our community.

Woven into the curriculum throughout the year, this project will take students through a design-thinking process that asks them to research, interview experts, empathize with those impacted, brainstorm possible solutions or improvements, give and receive feedback, and use feedback to re-imagine or re-design their original ideas.

About Gillispie School: We are an independent toddler through Grade 6 school in La Jolla, CA. We believe that learning is a journey in which children are active participants. Our students partner with teachers to further their academic, creative, and social growth, and we balance a child-centered approach that does not rush childhood with well-researched academic programs that demand higher-level thinking.
