First graders love to be busy and engaged. Reading and writing skills introduced in Kindergarten are extended with individual and small group work through Lucy Calkins’ Reading and Writing Workshop. The Singapore Math approach is emphasized and supplemented with work that incorporates manipulatives and practice of addition and subtraction fact families. Students learn basic research skills and complete a research report. Science focuses on the life cycle, and a highlight of the year is eating the vegetables the students have planted, maintained, and harvested in the schoolyard garden. The world becomes even more exciting with anaylsis of the past and present, a look at comparative cultures, and an in-depth study of the far-away continent of Antarctica. Each week, Grade 1 students attend classes in art, library, music, Spanish, technology, and physical education, so that they may develop awareness of a wide range of content and practice as well as build essential skills.
