Creating a Balanced Literacy Program with Lucy Calkins

Gillispie’s elementary teachers are coming together to learn with consultant Ryan Candelario as we continue to refine our delivery of the Lucy Calkins’ Workshops. Adding to our knowledge of the Writers Workshop (last year’s emphasis), we are currently focused on the Readers Workshop in creating a balanced literacy program.

While on campus, Mr. Candelario taught students in some of our elementary classrooms while teachers observed his delivery of content in both whole and small group settings. A focus was on small group instruction which emphasizes lessons that are concise, repeated, and frequently practiced so that students gain strategies and skills in reading and writing. After the demonstration lessons, Mr. Candelario met with elementary teachers to share how techniques can be implemented at their own grade levels.

These opportunities are made possible by the Gillispie Endowment of Excellence in Teaching, and are a wonderful example of how philanthropy makes change here at Gillispie.

As a community of learners, we are continually seeking ways to improve ourselves and our craft. By shifting their roles to that of students during this workshop, teachers modeled for our children this trait, which is essential to being a better educator and a better person.

About Gillispie School: We are an independent toddler through Grade 6 school in La Jolla, CA. We believe that learning is a journey in which children are active participants. Our students partner with teachers to further their academic, creative, and social growth, and we balance a child-centered approach that does not rush childhood with well-researched academic programs that demand higher-level thinking.
