Grade 4 Visits Feeding San Diego

As a kick off to the school-wide food drive, Grade 4 students recently visited Feeding San Diego where they sorted, packed, and weighed potatoes, pears, and squash donated by local farms.

By the end of the three-hour shift, the children had packed 2500 pounds of food.

The food was later delivered and distributed to the organization’s mobile pantries around San Diego as well as the UCSD diabetic wellness program.

Feeding San Diego feeds over 65,000 people a week, and this annual trip leaves children feeling empowered that they can make a difference.

Student’s reflections on the experience:

“When I finished I felt very good because I like to help people.”

“Don’t you think the hungry will appreciate all the good food!”

“We did this to help the hungry, the less fortunate, those who might have lost a job or for people who just need help.”

“It was a great experience because it taught us that helping a charity is fun.”

“It felt good to help people in need.”

“It was a fun day all around.”

“We were checking for mold or gashes on potatoes and pears.”

“We learned that 1 out of 6 people are hungry.”

With bins of donated food around campus, we appreciate the support that the Gillispie community has given to the Grade 4 students and the Feeding San Diego organization.

As we embark on a week-long break to celebrate with family and friends, we give thanks for all that we have, and more importantly, all that we are able to give.
