Welcome to Summer Session 2008
A delightful summer awaits children of all ages as they participate in our camp or academic classes. The Gillispie School is conveniently located in the village of La Jolla and offers a wide range of exciting programs. Gillispie’s Summer Session is built on our school’s mission to improve the lives of its students by providing a quality education in a nurturing environment.

Summer Session 2008 At A Glance Calendar
Hours
- The campus opens at 8:00 a.m. and closes at 5:00 p.m. Extended care is provided at no additional charge for students enrolled until 3 p.m. Early Childhood and Elementary before school care is from 8–8:30 a.m. and after care is from 3–5 p.m. Sign in sheets will be available at drop off and pick up for Early Childhood students.
Registration
- Please register for all desired sessions as early as possible. Classes are filled on a first come, first served basis. Applications received by June 1st, 2007 will determine class availability. Elementary classes are open to both Gillispie and non Gillispie students. Early Childhood classes are open to students enrolled at Gillispie during the 2007-2008 school year. The application is included in this packet.

Fee Policy
- Fees vary and are indicated with each class description. Payment for all registered classes must be submitted with application. If payment is received before March 30, 2007, a 10% discount will apply. All classes are subject to adequate enrollment. If the minimum class size is not met, a full refund will be made. If a student withdraws on or before June 1, 2007, 90% of the fees will be refunded. No refunds will be given after June 4, 2007.
Grade level and Conduct
- All grade levels listed refer to the grade the student will be entering in September 2007. The school’s conduct policies as outlined in the Parent Handbook will apply to all Summer Sessions.
Field Trips
- Off campus field trips may occur throughout the summer. Parents will be notified in advance of locations and any additional charges.
- The Gillispie School admits students of any race, color, gender, national or ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school.
Early Childhood Day Camp
- Preschool & Early Kindergarten
- Our early childhood teachers are committed to providing a safe and nurturing environment that promotes the physical, intellectual and social development of young children. The teaching staff includes several Gillispie faculty members who have a wealth of experience. Children will enjoy an array of activities during camp, including indoor and outdoor games, water play, crafts, dramatic play, and rhythm and movement. The summer program is open to children enrolled at Gillispie for the 2008 - 2009 school year.
Elementary Day Camp
- Kindergarten – Grade 3
- Gillispie Day Camp provides an opportunity for children to have fun while learning. Day camp will be filled with enrichment activities that stimulate the mind and body. Children entering Kindergarten - Grade 3 will have a great time experiencing all the activities that Gillispie has to offer. Children need to bring a lunch each day and snacks are provided.
Camp Themes
- Session One: Students will participate in a dramatic performance. Morning campers will participate in activities related to the afternoon performance. Ms. Haas will work with the cast in the afternoon creating props and costumes. A final performance will for family and friends will take place on Thursday, July 3. Session Two: Students will participate in a variety of sports. Several field trips will take place, such as bowling, ice skating, and mini golf. The children and teachers will walk to the Coggan Aquatic Center in the afternoon. Lessons are given by Aquatic Center staff. A certified lifeguard is on site at all times. Children in session two will need a swimsuit, towel, and sunblock. Session Three: Join the summer Eco Club. Make helping the environment part of your daily routine. Students will learn the fundamentals of contributing to a healthy environment. Wear the Eco Club wristband and show your promise to protect our Earth. Session Four: Students will have an opportunity to get their minds activated for the new school year.
Reading Adventures

Reading Adventures is a class designed to encourage reading, writing, and spelling in a fun, nurturing environment. Educational games, books, songs, and worksheets will be used.
Reading Corner

Computer Connection

Take time to have fun with computers while practicing keyboarding skills with the Type to Learn computer program. Creative writing will be integrated into the activities.
Engineering Exploration
- Mrs. Buttaro - Grades 1-3

Test your engineering skills in Gillispie's summer building and design class. This class will engage students with several weekly problems or questions with an engineering design challenge. Students will test structures, assess which techniques worked best and record their observations in their engineering journal. Engineering projects foster a child's natural curiosity and promote math and science skills, so sign up now!
Math Connection
- Ms. Swaney - Grade 1
- Ms. Doolittle - Grades 2-3

- Session Four - August 4-15

Students will estimate, use mental math, talk about numbers, compute, and become more flexible working with numbers. Activities will include: games, logic, and word problems. This class is geared toward students who want to maintain their grasp of math concepts.

Join Senora Radchik as she takes you on an adventure to explore the language, culture, and foods of Mexico. Crafts, cooking, games, and songs will be incorporated into the reading and writing lessons. A fiesta at the end of the session will provide an opportunity for the children to share and practice what they have learned!
Extreme Art!

Sew Yourself Silly!

Boys and girls, join in and sew up a storm! Learn sewing basics such as sewing on a button and mending a hole. Create an extra-special sewing project that you’ll be sure to like. “Sew” why not sign up for some summer stitching with Ms. Blake?
Woodworking
- Ms. Pirtle & Mr. Sim

- Session Two - July 7-18
- 9:00-12:00 p.m.
- Grades 1-3
This class is designed to engage both boys and girls in the art of woodworking. The children will learn safety and the proper use of hand tools. Each child will make a rope ladder and a pencil holder. Come and learn while having fun.
Jewelry Making

- Grades 2-3
Learn to make your own beautiful jewelry using semi-precious stones, pearls, and colorful beads! Create some extraordinary pieces while learning the basics of jewelry making, such as beading, finishing with clasps, and hanging pendants. Take home your creations to keep for yourself or to give as stunning gifts.
