Summer Session 2010
Welcome
The Gillispie School is located in the village of La Jolla and offers a summer program with a wide range of fun and educational activities. A special summer awaits children in preschool through Grade 4 as they participate in our camp, enrichment options, or academic classes. Gillispie’s Summer Session is built on our school’s mission. Our program serves as a “springboard for children’s love of learning, creativity, and readiness for the future.”

Hours (New Hours)
- The campus opens at 8:00 a.m. and closes at 4:00 p.m. Sign-in sheets will be available at drop off and pick up for early childhood students. Extended care is provided at no additional charge for elementary students from 8-8:30 a.m. and 3-4:00 p.m.
Registration
- Elementary applications will be available to Gillispie students enrolled during the 2010-2011 school year beginning Monday, March 15, at 7:00 a.m. Elementary applications will be accepted for all other students on Friday, March 19, at 7:00 a.m. Classes are filled on a first-come-first-serve basis and parents may only sign up their own child/children. In addition, because of the popularity of the art classes, a student may only be enrolled in one art enrichment class. Academic and enrichment classes are limited to 10 students unless otherwise stated. Applications received by June 4, 2010, will determine class availability. Early childhood classes are only open to children currently enrolled in Gillispie’s 2009-2010 early childhood program or those enrolled for the 2010-2011 school year (ages 3-5). The application and prices are included in this packet.
Fee Policy
- Fees vary and are indicated on the application. Payment for all registered classes must be submitted with your application. If payment is received before Wednesday, March 31, 2010, a 10% discount will apply. Classes will run only if there is adequate enrollment. If the minimum class size is not met, a full refund will be made. If a student withdraws on or before June 1, 2009, 90% of the fees will be refunded. No refunds are given after June 5, 2010.
Grade level and Conduct
- All grade levels listed refer to the grade the student will be entering in September 2010. Conduct expectations are outlined in the Parent Handbook (available at the front desk).
Early Childhood Day Camp
- Preschool & PreKindergarten
- Early Childhood Day Camp Preschool - PreKindergarten Our early childhood teachers are committed to providing a safe and nurturing environment that promotes the physical, intellectual, and social development of the young child. The teaching staff includes several Gillispie faculty members who have a wealth of teaching experience, along with other experienced professionals. Children will enjoy an array of activities during camp, including indoor and outdoor games, water play, crafts, and dramatic play.
Elementary Day Camp
- Kindergarten – Grade 4
- Gillispie Day Camp provides an opportunity for children to have fun while learning. Children entering Kindergarten through Grade 4 will have a great time making new friends and creating lasting memories of the summer. Morning activities include sports, crafts, games, cooking, and Theatre & Art. The afternoon session includes swimming at the Coggan Aquatic Center. The Coggan Aquatic Center swim instructors teach group lessons and campers will be placed in the appropriate swim-level group and learn skills that will improve their swimming ability. After the lessons the campers will have free swim under the supervision of a certified lifeguard and the Gillispie teachers. The Coggan Aquatic Center is conveniently located at La Jolla High School.

Theatre & Art
The campers will be taught acting skills that include facial expression, body language, and voice projection. All campers will experience the thrill of being on stage. The fun continues as students create masks, costumes, and set designs for the final performance on Friday, July 30. Come and enjoy being a star!

Pre-Engineering
Have your child become a Play-Well Engineer this summer! Students will build cities, bridges, and motorized cars/planes and explore the many creative possibilities of engineering with the Lego System. With access to over 100,000 pieces of Lego, your child will have the opportunity to build what they have only dreamed of with the support of an experienced Play-Well Engineering Instructor to guide them.
Baubles, Beads and Bangles
Using found and purchased materials, students will create unique and whimsical jewelry pieces. A beautiful paper mache jewelry box will be completed to artfully hold a paper mache bangle, polymer clay jewelry, shrink art charms, and more!
Engineering Fundamentals
Have your child become a Play-Well Engineer this summer! Students take on real-life engineering challenges that explore concepts in physics, architecture, mechanical and structural engineering with over 100,000 pieces of LEGO® material. From race cars to battle tracks, this is a hands-on and minds-on camp suitable for LEGO® novices to “maniacs.” Designed by engineers, the curriculum challenges both new and returning students to reach the next level of engineering comprehension all while having fun.
Violin
Budding violinists will experience the joy of making music together while learning the basics of string technique of the violin. Correct posture, bow hold, and music fundamentals are integral elements of this class. Maximum 5 students.
Guitar
The fundamentals of guitar playing are introduced with a collaborative and fun approach. Learn to play with correct posture and hand position through the study of classical and popular techniques. Maximum 5 students.

Budding violinists will experience the joy of making music together while learning the basics of string technique of the violin. Correct posture, bow hold, and music fundamentals are integral elements of this class. Maximum 5 students.
Creative Writing
Get ready to write! This class will encourage a love of writing by creating imaginative stories, and descriptions that will connect to books we read. Each day students will practice basic penmanship and sight word skills. Join us on the last day of class for a Write with Pride Party where students will showcase their work.
Magical Mathematicians
Let your mind soar as you solve word problems, create math treats and learn tricks to spark your interest in math. Students will explore place value, addition, subtraction, money, and graphing in this math class filled with fun. This course is perfect for students who want to maintain or enrich their grasp of math concepts. Literature and manipulatives will be used to enhance the learning process.
FUN-ky Math
Join Mrs. Davis and have fun exploring probability with handmade number shakers, turn two-dimensional graphing into three-dimensional wall hangings, design sculptures that start from simple triangles that end up as geodesic domes. Learn more about your math talents while building and designing special creations. Children will use a variety of manipulative to discover and explore, as well as strengthen and expand math concept skills.

Sew Yourself Silly!
Join in and sew up a storm! Learn sewing basics such as sewing on a button and how to do the running stitch and whipstitch. Create extra-special sewing projects that you’ll be sure to like. “Sew” why not sign up for some summer stitching with Ms. Blake? This class is limited to 8 students.
Messy Magic
Calling all beginning chemists and mess makers to experiment with interesting materials for some afternoon fun with Mrs. Davis. You will make slime, goop, funny putty, paper, and use polymers that do interesting things. This will be an exciting hands-on class that you are definitely going to enjoy.

Puppet Pizzaz
Take your imagination on a fantastic puppet making adventures with Mrs. Davis. Puppeteers will create a variety of puppets, set up a unique puppet theater, and write original scripts for puppet shows. Have fun using simple materials that create special puppets. This is a perfect class for children who like to create, imagine, and pretend. See you there!
Fairy Magic
Flower fairies, moonlight fairies, snowflake fairies, dancing fairies-which kind of fairy will you create? There are fairy castles, fairy cottages, fairy tress houses, and fairy boats. Which kind of fairy house will you create? We’ll be making fairy wands and wings, books, and tea cups. And, of course, we’ll finish our fairy magic with a fairy tea for our family and friends. This class is limited to 8 students.

Pre-Reading Strategies
This class will focus on pre-reading strategies. Children will review letter sounds, patters preview a selection of sight words, and experience the joys that books can bring. Reading books for enjoyment will be fostered through a variety of creative activities.
Reading Adventures
Reading Adventures is a class designed to encourage reading and writing in a fun, nurturing environment. Children will read high frequency spelling words and decode words using first grade phonetic knowledge. Educational games, literature books, and worksheets will be used.
Reading Corner
This course is designed to help students gain confidence in reading and improve their basic skills. Children will read grade level text with an emphasis on decoding and recognizing high frequency words. They will identify characters, setting, and the main idea in books and stories. Children will be able to ask and answer questions that demonstrate comprehension of the material they have read. A love of reading is fostered through story telling and story writing, along with teacher directed literature activities.
Hooked on Books
This exciting new literature class will strengthen the love of reading while allowing imaginations to soar! In addition to reading a novel, each day we will celebrate a different piece of literature. Art projects, games, and writing will be incorporated into daily lessons. Emphasis will be placed on improving comprehension strategies such as predicting, summarizing, clarifying, and making inferences. This class will include walking field trips to the La Jolla Public Library.

Woodworking
This class is designed to engage both boys and girls in the art of woodworking. The children will learn safety and the proper use of hand tools. Each child will design and build two wooden projects. Come and learn while having fun.
